How behind-the-ear hearing aids work

A behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid holds its microphones, processor, battery and speaker in a case that sits behind the ear. Sound travels through a thin tube into the ear canal, ending in a dome or a custom ear mold made from an impression of your ear.

Because the case has room for a larger speaker and battery, BTEs cover the widest range of hearing loss, from mild to profound. Super power BTEs are often the only practical option for severe-to-profound loss.

Who they suit

BTEs suit children (the ear mold can be remade as the ear grows while the hearing aid stays the same), adults with severe or profound loss, and people who prefer a larger device that is easier to handle and clean.

They are also a good choice for ears that produce a lot of wax or moisture, since the electronics sit outside the ear canal. Custom ear molds are part of our hearing aid package.
