How receiver-in-canal hearing aids work

A receiver-in-canal (RIC, also called RIE) hearing aid has a small case behind the ear connected by a thin wire to a speaker (the receiver) that sits in the ear canal. Because the speaker is separate, the case behind the ear can be very small.

Receivers come in different power levels, so the same hearing aid can be fitted for mild to severe loss, and the receiver can be changed if your hearing changes.

Who they suit

RIC is the most widely fitted style today. With an open dome the ear canal is not blocked, so your own voice sounds natural, which makes RIC a comfortable choice for first-time wearers with mild to moderate loss.

Most rechargeable and Bluetooth models are made in this style. The receiver sits in the ear canal, so wax filters need regular changing; we show you how at your fitting.
