What mild to moderate hearing loss feels like
Mild hearing loss (20 to 34 dB on the WHO scale) often shows up as missing soft speech, struggling in noisy rooms and asking people to repeat themselves. With moderate loss (35 to 49 dB), normal conversation becomes hard to follow and the TV volume creeps up.
Because the change is gradual, many people live with it for years. Early fitting keeps the brain used to processing speech sounds, which tends to make adjusting to hearing aids easier.
Hearing aid options at this level
Almost every style can correct mild to moderate loss, including the most discreet in-canal models and small receiver-in-canal devices with open domes that keep the ear feeling natural. The choice then comes down to appearance, ease of handling and features such as rechargeable batteries or Bluetooth.
A diagnostic hearing test confirms the degree of loss in each ear and rules out wax or middle-ear problems that need medical treatment instead.
