How hearing loss is graded

Hearing loss is graded by the average hearing threshold in the better ear, measured in decibels (dB HL) on a pure-tone audiogram. The World Health Organization (World Report on Hearing, 2021) uses these grades: mild 20 to 34 dB, moderate 35 to 49 dB, moderately severe 50 to 64 dB, severe 65 to 79 dB and profound 80 to 94 dB.

Each ear is tested separately, and the loss is rarely the same at every pitch. Many people hear low sounds well but miss high-pitched speech sounds such as "s", "f" and "th".

Matching the hearing aid to the loss

Every hearing aid has a fitting range, the amount of loss its speaker can correct. A device that is too weak will sound thin and distorted; one that is far too powerful is larger than it needs to be. That is why we always start with a diagnostic hearing test before recommending a model.
