What moderately severe hearing loss means
On the WHO scale, moderately severe hearing loss is an average threshold of 50 to 64 dB in the better ear. Most conversational speech is hard to hear without amplification, group conversation is very difficult and phone calls are often a struggle.
Choosing a hearing aid at this level
Receiver-in-canal hearing aids with more powerful receivers, and behind-the-ear models, are the usual choices. A more closed fitting, using power domes or a custom ear mold, keeps the extra amplification from escaping and causing whistling.
Speech-in-noise processing matters more at this level, so it is worth comparing technology levels. Bluetooth streaming is especially useful because it delivers phone calls directly into both ears.
Regular hearing checks are important, as hearing at this level can continue to change. We retest and reprogram your devices when needed, free for the first year.
