What severe and profound hearing loss mean
On the WHO scale, severe hearing loss is an average threshold of 65 to 79 dB in the better ear and profound loss is 80 to 94 dB. Without amplification most speech is inaudible, and even with hearing aids, lip-reading and good lighting help a great deal.
Power hearing aids and what else to consider
Super power behind-the-ear hearing aids and power receiver-in-canal models are designed for this level. A custom ear mold is essential: it seals the ear so the high amplification does not leak out and whistle. Our package includes custom ear molds.
Accurate testing and careful fine-tuning matter more at this level, because there is less room between sounds that are too soft to hear and sounds that are uncomfortable.
If a well-fitted power hearing aid still gives limited speech understanding, we refer you to an ENT specialist to discuss whether a cochlear implant assessment is appropriate.
